Diabetes Association launches Diabetes Summer Surge

Posted Jul 29, 2010 By EMC News

EMC News - This summer, the Canadian Diabetes Association is ramping up the fight against diabetes by hosting the Diabetes Summer Surge.

The Diabetes Summer Surge is an open invitation for people to hold fundraisers in support of diabetes research and education. The national program is designed to be a catalyst for fundraising efforts by volunteers. Fundraisers can include yard sales, barbecues, lawn cutting and car washes.

"This campaign gives people an opportunity to have some summer fun while contributing to the war on diabetes," explains Terry Cavanaugh, regional director of the Canadian Diabetes Association in South East Ontario.

Today, nearly one in four Canadians has diabetes or pre-diabetes. Money raised through summer fundraisers will fund education, services, advocacy and research to support people living with diabetes (including local children). The campaign ends Aug. 15, and residents are invited to support the Surge by setting up or supporting an event, donating to the association or spreading the word.

The Canadian Diabetes Association is proud to be a leading supporter of diabetes research in Canada.

New this year to the campaign is a chance to designate donations to an area of work. For example, if a donor or fundraiser would like to support diabetes research, donations can now go directly towards funding Canada's most renowned scientists and clinicians in their quest for new and innovative developments in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes. Association funded researchers are searching for new treatments in areas such as biology, prevention and management, obesity, complications, diabetes in special populations and problems with insulin.

Quick facts about diabetes in Canada:

- Presently more than three million Canadians are living with diabetes and a further six million Canadians have pre-diabetes. Each and every day another 480 Canadians are diagnosed with the disease.

- This summer alone, more than 43,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with diabetes and may see their life expectancy reduced by as much as 15 years.

- The cost of diabetes has doubled over the past decade to $12.2 billion and will continue to escalate over the next decade by an additional $4.7 billion.
