Above, participants in the bike tour let loose after a long day of cycling with activities and a reception at the University of Guelph-Kemptville Campus after last year's event.
This is the 21st year for the tour, which bills itself as Ottawa's only two-day bike tour and offers "cyclists of all fitness levels a fully supported ride that mixes fun with fundraising, combining a great cycling experience with the reward of helping to end MS," according to the MS Society of Canada, Ottawa chapter's website.
The event gives cyclists the opportunity to enjoy the scenic ride from Ottawa to Kemptville and participants have the option to participate for one day on Aug. 7 (with a tour length of either 65 or 80 kilometres), or both days on Aug. 7 and 8 (with a tour length of 127, 145 or 180 kilometres). The bike tour will take place rain or shine.
"Riders will be guaranteed a weekend of fun, with cycling on paved country roads with the assistance of an experienced support team, drinks and snacks provided every 15 kilometres along the route, a delicious barbecue lunch and the camaraderie that comes from cycling with over 600 riders raising money for a good cause," the website states.
After a long day of cycling, cyclists can enjoy dinner at the University of Guelph-Kemptville Campus, participate in a number of fun activities and win prizes donated by a number of sponsors.
Organizers have added several new features to the bike tour this year, including a cycle shop and related exhibits at Kemptville Campus. "Participants from previous years will be keen to know several exciting enhancements have been added to the tour this year and in addition to the usual corn roast, beer garden, games, movies and music at Kemptville (Campus), riders will have the opportunity to browse the latest gear from cycle shops in an exhibition at the college," the website noted.
For the one-day tour, registration is $45 or $38 without dinner. For the full two days, including indoor accommodations, the cost is $75. Those who would like to camp can do so for $45 or if participants wish to book their own accommodations offsite, the cost will be $38 to register. Please note that all cyclists participating must raise a minimum of $250 in pledges in order to ride in the bike tour. Those under 12 must register but are not required to raise the pledges.
Those interested are invited to register as an individual, join a team or form your own team of friends to bike along for the tour. To register, please visit www.mssociety.ca/chapters/ottawa/BikeTour or call 613-728-1583. More information about the Ottawa RONA MS Bike Tour, including frequently asked questions, a map of the route as well as fundraising tips can also be found by visiting the above site. If cycling isn't your thing but you still wish to help a friend and donate to the cause, there's a function to do so on the website as well.
