EMC Events - The Kemptville branch of Victoria's Quilts (VQ) Canada will be hosting the tea room at the Kemptville Quilters Guild's 'Hooked on Fabric' Quilt Show which will take place at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Aug. 14 and 15.

The ladies of VQ will be serving lunch, tea, coffee, soft drinks and goodies to the visitors at a small cost. Proceeds from the tea room will go towards purchasing more fabric, batting and backing for the Kemptville branch to continue making the quilts.

Victoria's Quilts Canada is a national non-profit charitable organization with headquarters in Ottawa and independent branches in cities and towns across Canada. The organization is run by volunteers whose mission it is to give hand-made quilts to people with cancer which provide both physical and spiritual comfort.

The Kemptville branch was one of the first branches established. It meets the third Saturday of most months in St. John's United Church hall for "working bees." Here the ladies can choose what they would like to work at from cutting the fabric, to sewing the quilt tops, sandwiching the quilts or machine quilting. The quilts are made out of 100 per cent cotton fabric with a flannelette backing and cotton batting.

Most of the ladies also work on the quilts at home and have met in smaller groups as well.

More than 250 quilts, complete with carry bag, often in matching fabric, have been delivered to cancer patients by the Kemptville branch. The quilts are a gift. No cost is ever passed on to the quilt recipient or to the person who requests the quilt.

New volunteers are welcome, they can be quilters of all skill levels, but non-quilting volunteers are also needed to assist with other tasks. Many of the members were beginner quilters when they first joined.

To request a quilt for someone with cancer, all that is needed is the name, address and telephone number of the person receiving the quilt as well as the person making the request. To request a quilt from the Kemptville branch, please phone Elaine at 613-258-3996 or Mae at 613-258-1384.

In order to raise funding for supplies the Kemptville branch has held quilt raffles, craft shows and have also appreciated receiving donations of money from service clubs and individual people as well as donations of fabric. As a non-profit charitable organization, VQ is registered with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and provides receipts for financial donations of $10 or more.

The members of the Kemptville branch of VQ have comforted and soothed the spirits of many people battling cancer but they have also had their own spirits lifted by the friendship they have shared working together.
