Recent 'Weekend to End Women's Cancers' info sessions a big success

EMC News - The Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) Foundation hosted two information sessions on the 'Weekend to End Women's Cancers' on Feb. 17, which resulted in almost 20 new walkers signing up!

The 'Weekend to End Women's Cancers' is an annual event organized by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (ORCF). Through a special agreement with the ORCF, 75 per cent of all funds raised by local teams are returned back to the KDH Foundation and designated towards the mammography fundraising campaign (MamCam). Efforts by last year's teams returned $46,507 to KDH and the MamCam and hopes are high that this year's teams can top that figure.

Almost 40 people have already signed up for the walk, including the returning team, Country Boobkins (with more than 20 members and captained by Sue Van Asseldonk), Kemptville Yoginis (captained by the Bodhi Tree Yoga's Gayle Poapst), the KDH Auxiliary Breast Cancer Walkers (captained by Lis Angus), and the KDH Bust Buddies, captained by Mary Boucher of the KDH Foundation.

Donna Lee O'Farrell of O'Farrell Financial Services Inc., was one of those in attendance at the afternoon information session and has committed to participating as well as recruiting additional walkers.

"Cancer has touched all of our lives. It's important as a community that we come together to support the mammography campaign," she said. "By participating in the walk, we can show our support as a family and as a business, while having fun at the same time."

Bodhi Tree Yoga's Poapst created her team on the spot after attending the afternoon information session. "Like so many others, breast cancer has touched my life. Participating in the walk and taking part in other fundraising initiatives for the mammography campaign are important to me. We need to ensure that mammography is available here in Kemptville," she remarked.

The Bodhi Tree has also begun selling pink yoga mats, with net proceeds benefiting the MamCam.
